How to Use ChatGPT for TOEFL® Writing Practice

ChatGPT can be a flexible TOEFL® Writing tutor, but only if you give it the right structure. This guide shows how to prompt ChatGPT for realistic practice and useful feedback.

Why ChatGPT alone is not enough

ChatGPT is great at explaining grammar and suggesting rewrites, but it does not keep your prompts organized, save your attempts, or enforce a consistent scoring rubric. If you paste random essays into chat threads, you end up with scattered feedback that is hard to study from.

Step 1: Give ChatGPT a clear role

Start each session by telling ChatGPT exactly what you want it to do. For example:

You are an experienced TOEFL Writing rater. I will paste my response to a TOEFL Writing task. Evaluate it using the official TOEFL Writing rubric and give me:
1. An overall TOEFL score from 0 to 30.
2. Subscores for task response, organization, development, and language use.
3. Three strengths.
4. Three weaknesses with examples.
5. Three phrase-level rewrites to sound more academic.

Step 2: Provide the full task

Always paste the original prompt, the reading passage (if any), and the lecture summary (if any). ChatGPT needs context to judge whether your response addresses the task accurately.

Step 3: Ask for a rewrite plan, not just a new essay

It is tempting to ask ChatGPT to rewrite your whole essay. That is less useful than asking it to explain why specific sentences are weak and how you could rewrite them. Use prompts like:

Step 4: Track your progress

Save each essay, the prompt, and the feedback in a document or spreadsheet. Look for patterns. If your organization score is always the lowest, that is your priority skill for the next week.
